See ball, hit ball just got a whole lot easier
On Saturday I improved my cricket batting by doing one thing between each ball. I meditated.
I didn't sit down in the lotus position and close my eyes while the bowler was running in.
No, I shifted my attention (completely) away from what I feared.
Side note: cricket balls are rock hard and, with highly skilled bowlers, can travel in excess of 80MPH (occasionally at your head). So, pretty damn scary.
Not wanting that rock hard ball to hit me in the balls, naturally my mind raced with plans to smash the ball back over the bowler's head – doing so often leads to getting yourself out.
(something I've made a habit of over the years).
But on Saturday I tried something new. In between each delivery, I took a deep breath in and said silently to myself "I am not the body". Then breathed out and said "I am not even the mind".
Then I simply uttered "watch the ball".
This removed all fear that I would lose my wicket or get injured.
And, for the first time in years, batting came easy. Simple even. And, crucially, I was calm – a critical element to successful batting.
Without all of that internal narration, I could focus 100% on the only thing that mattered – hitting the fucking ball.
FYI, this applies to all aspects of your life. If you place your attention on something other than what you fear, you will 'distract' yourself from said fear.
Give it a try. It works!
